祖籍廣東開平。自1982年開始，便積極參與戲劇演出。崗位遍及編劇、導演、演員及監製。早年已多次在市政局舉辦之戲劇匯演中屢次獲獎。1990年畢業於香港演藝學院戲劇學院導演系，旋即加入電影圈。效力於徐克的電影工作室，之後曾轉職電視台，也創立過動畫製作公司、電影製作公司等，直至2006年9月成為香港話劇團駐團導演為止，是香港戲劇界少數擁有豐富影視製作及創作經驗的導演。2012年9月開始正式加入香港演藝學院，在2017年10月起任香港演藝學院戲劇學院之副教授（導演）。而累計至今，他參與過不少大型演出，包括《雪狼湖》、《漫步人生路》、《鬚根show2》、《男親女愛》、《德齡與慈禧》等等，當中導演的作品達一百部以上，2022年執導了《求証》並且剛剛完成了第111部作品《天下第一樓》。

2010年，他執導《豆泥戰爭》獲「香港舞台劇獎最佳導演 (喜/鬧劇)」，2012年執導《脫皮爸爸》再再獲同一殊榮。此劇並於2017年改編拍成電影，並邀請高世章為電影配樂。在2014年，執導《都是龍袍惹的禍》獲香港舞台劇獎「最佳導演 (悲劇/正劇)」。此後的作品更被國際認同。例如在2016年，為香港演藝學院執導《元宵》，在斯洛伐克藝術節中得到「觀眾最喜愛大獎」和「最佳融合演出獎」。2017年執導《親愛的胡雪巖》，除獲得第二十六屆香港舞台劇獎四項大獎，更獲2017上海·靜安現代戲劇谷壹戲劇大賞「年度最佳導演奬」。2019年，再憑此劇獲得第二屆華語戲劇盛典的六大獎項，其中包括最佳導演和最佳年度製作。此劇於同年再下一城，獲得香港國際演藝評論家協會IATC(HK)劇評人獎，所頒發的年度最佳導演獎。2021年，再憑《德齡與慈禧》，獲得第四屆華語戲劇盛典的六大獎項，包括最佳導演和最佳年度製作，成績斐然。2021年底，更憑此劇獲得一份寶貴的冬至禮物，就是由中央戲劇學院主辦的首屆國際戲劇"學院獎"之最佳導演獎。


Roy Szeto has been actively involved in theatre performance since 1982. He has worked as a playwright, director, actor, and producer. In his early years, he won multiple awards at drama competitions hosted by the Urban Council. He graduated from the School of Drama of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, major in directing in 1990 and joined the film industry, working for Tsui Hark's Film Workshop. He later transitioned to television and founded animation and film production companies. In September 2006, he became the resident director of the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre, and is one of the few directors in the Hong Kong theater industry with extensive experience in film and television production and creativity. He officially joined the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts in September 2012 and has been the associate professor (directing) of the School of Drama since October 2017. He has participated in numerous large-scale performances, including "Snow Wolf Lake," "The Legend of Teresa Tang," "Shogun Show(Part 2)," "War of Genders," and "Deling and Cixi," among others. He has directed over 111 productions, including "Proof" in 2022 and his latest work, "The Top Restaurant"

In 2010, he won the "Best Director (Comedy/Farce)" award at the Hong Kong Drama Awards for his direction of "God of Carnage" He won the same award again in 2012 for his direction of "Shed Skin" This play was adapted into a movie in 2017, with music composed by Leon Ko. In 2014, he won the "Best Director (Tragedy/Drama)" award at the Hong Kong Drama Awards for his direction of "The Emperor, his Mom, a Eunich and a Man" His works have gained international recognition, such as in 2016, when he directed "The Twelve Night " for the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, and won the "Audience Award" and "Best Fusion Performance Award" at the Slovakian Arts Festival. In 2017, he directed "HuXueYan, my Dear" and won four major awards at the 26th Hong Kong Drama Awards, as well as the "Best Director Award" at the 2017 Shanghai Jing'an Modern Drama Valley One Drama Awards. In 2019, he won six awards, including "Best Director" and "Best Production of the Year," at the 2nd Chinese Drama Awards for " HuXueYan, my Dear" The play also won the "Best Director Award" at the Hong Kong International Theatre Critics Association IATC(HK) Critics Awards. In 2021, he won six awards, including "Best Director" and "Best Production of the Year," at the 4th Chinese Drama Awards for "Deling and Cixi" At the end of 2021, he received a precious winter solstice gift, the "Best Director Award," at the inaugural International Theatre Academy Awards organized by the Central Academy of Drama.
