《In Search of Utopia》

Design Concept

Showcased is a 1:15 model of a three-storey “Tong Lau”, a kind of tenement building in Hong Kong, in which the self-funded black-box production “Vismopheric Experiment: In Search of Utopia” took place in June 2018. The performance was devised by a group of theatre enthusiasts graduating from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts majoring set and design related subjects. Soon after graduation, they realised the conformity of traditional practices in the theatre industry. And in response to the constraint, the team initiated the project in search of a new way to create a theatrical piece. “In Search of Utopia” was not only the title of the play, but also implies the initial intention of their project.

“In Search of Utopia” was adapted from the novel “1984” by Geroge Orwell. From the very moment stepping into the theatrical space, the audience was kept under surveillance by a system of CCTVs. Every single action of the audience was live-streamed on a “television totem pole” in the centre of the theatre, visible to everyone in the space. The performers’ actions on stage were also magnified and duplicated on the televisions to wrap up the performance.
